Contemporary Turned Wood: New Perspectives in a Rich Tradition
Published in Paperback by Guild of Master Craftsmen (30 November, 2000)
Authors: Ray Leier, Jan Peters, and Kevin Wallace
Average review score:

An exceptional exhibition of turned wood
The principals of the Del Mano Gallery have presented an excellent photographic rendition of the extraordinary craftsmanship exhibited at their Los Angeles (Brentwood) gallery.

While the photo illustrations are excellent, the photos do not do justice to the actual visual representation of each piece. These works of art need to be seen first individually in order to appreciate their craftsmanship.

Coronado: The Enchanted Island
Published in Hardcover by Coronado Historical Association (1998)
Authors: Ray Brandes and Katherine E. Carlin
Average review score:

The Story of Coronado !!!!!!!
Katherine Carlin, one of the authors of this book loved Coronado and was among the founding members of the Coronado Historical Association. Katherine came to Coronado in 1928, and about the time the Coronado Ferries went out of commission and our little town was reached via the Coronado / San Diego bridge, she worked very hard gathering the stories and pictures to put this book together with the help of Dr. Brandes. She was a delightful person, and I remember her very fondly. While I do not know Dr. Ray Brandes, I do believe that his father was Sgt. Brandes of the Coronado Police Dept., and he was a role model of mine when he formed the Coronado Junior Police in the mid 1950's. This book will bring back memories to anyone who has spent time in Coronado in the early years before the Coronado bridge, the Coronado Shores, and the Coronado Cays. Enjoy! Helen

Coronado, the Crown City!
Anyone who was born and grew up in Coronado as I have, will love reading every page of this book, and to remininse over all the old pictures. It will bring back many memories of times past, time when Coronado was a much smaller and quieter island. I believe that I have every book ever written about Coronado, and I especially treasure the two written by this author.

More From the Author of Corvette 1953-1962
If you've already read Mike Mueller's first Corvette offering, or if you happen to think the Sting Rays of the mid-sixties were the best of the bunch, this book's another must-read. Done in the same style of his previous efort, with lots of technical and historical information, Mr. Mueller provides an in-depth look at the five-year run of Sting Rays. He also supplies many beautiful examples of his own photographic expertise. This book's an excellent companion to any other Corvette books you may own, as well as a logical follow-up to Mr. Mueller's first book.

Counseling in Sports Medicine
Published in Hardcover by Human Kinetics Pub (April, 1999)
Authors: Richard Ray and Diane M. Wiese-Bjornstal
Average review score:

Good Advice for Sports Medicine Professional
This book offers the Athletic Training and other Sports Medicine Professionals good advice when working with athletes who need guidance. It is not easy to educate and counsel athletes. Too often athletes hear only what they want and not what they need to hear. Since athletes are highly motivated to achieve success in competition, they tend to focus on their problems and how it affect them, not others.

Athletes have multiple problems, just like the rest of the population, the difference is, that most will try to work on their issues if they are identified and given strategies that work. Ray and Wiese-Bjornstal do a good job of presenting problems and solutions. They have identified the sound techniques and theories that work in the counseling arena.

The authors are quick to point out the dangers of uneducated counseling and the warning signs of potential serious disorders. It is fair to assume that the reader should have some understanding of basic psychology, and human behavior.

The reader should also understand sport and the different circumstances it presents to daily living.

I have been a professional in Athletic Training for over 30 years and found the text to be very helpful. It is succint and to the point but also in detail and complete on the topics discussed. I highly reccomend the text for the Sports Medicine Professional.
